In his early twenties, he developed some health problems that caused him to look for alternative treatments and that is when he began researching stress. He also did a lot of reading and meditating, and came to realize that ultimately the answers he was looking for were in his own heart. He then began to research "heart intelligence". In 1991, he set up the Institute of HeartMath as a non-profit research and education organization to promote his ideas.
